2012 Has Arrived

It’s January – that time when we put our Christmas decorations away for another year‚ vow to lose the weight we gained over the holidays‚ concentrate on writing 2012 instead of 2011 and hopefully‚ take some time out to take stock of the year that just passed and make some plans for the new year. The year 2011 was another turbulent year in our world. Yet‚ in the midst of all the devastating news‚ we continued to gather together to share the stories and teachings of our lives in circles of women‚ friends and family. We thank each and every one of you for being part of our web of connection. Even in our small corner of the world‚ we are making our contribution towards connection and peace.

The end of 2011 marked the end of our fifteenth year of existence as the Front Royal Women’s Resource Center. Friends have come and friends have gone and we have learned many lessons along the way but‚ throughout all these years‚ we have continued to grow and thrive and we are grateful. Now we move on to a new year of connecting and serving our community.

PROGRAMS

Our annual Holiday Celebration was held on Friday‚ December 9 at Calvary Episcopal Church. December is a busy month with so many activities going on but we still had eighteen lovely women attend our annual gathering. Delicious dishes were provided by all who attended‚ we managed to fill up the church basket with all of our donated food items and best of all‚ the stories of our lives that were shared around the table enriched us all. We also celebrated and said goodbye to long–time board members and exchanged small gifts. It was an evening of laughter and womanship – what better way to end our fifteenth year.

Out–going Board Members Honored

At our annual holiday celebration‚ we honored two out–going board members for their long service to the FRWRC. The honorees were Eka Kapiotis and Janet Brome. Eka joined the board in 1998 and served as treasurer from 1999–2006. We will miss her wonderful presence and deep wisdom at our board meetings but‚ she is not leaving us and has taken over hosting our monthly radio programs. Janet Brome joined the board in 2002 and served as the coordinator of our Voices of Valley Women Oral History project. Janet always brought her great sense of humor and artistic sense to the board and she too will be greatly missed.

Other out–going board members honored were Betty Tice and Pat Millar who so capably chaired our Dare to Dream committee last year and could always be counted on to help out with any project or last minute details. Other long–time board members honored were Jean Barbour who served from 1999–2010 and Ellen Joyce who served from 2002–2009.

Nan Hathaway and Christine Andrea‚ both founding mothers of the FRWRC‚ continue to support us with their great generosity of spirit. Mary Ellewn South joined us in 2000 and continues to serve on the board as the Girl Grant Coordinator and Barbara Way‚ who joined the board in 2004‚ continues to serve on the board as Co– coordinator of the FRWRC. Carolyn Landis took over the important job of treasurer in 2006 and gratefully continues to serve in that capacity. There have been many more wonderful women who have offered their service to the care and nurturing of the FRWRC throughout these 15 years – Carolyn Majors‚ Vida Timbers‚ Martha Redstrom–Plourd‚ Karen Hade‚ Catherine Wolniewicz‚ Charlotte Watson‚ Patty Jones and Leslie Fiddler have all given their time and energy to service on the board. The FRWRC would never have grown over these years without the help of these wonderful women. We are forever grateful for their dedication and service to the women of our community.

Join the FRWRC at our WINTER MEMBERSHIP MIXER

Tuesday‚ February 21‚ 6:00 – 7:30 PM at Samuels Public Library.

The New Year is a time for change and renewal. Our membership mixer held last February was such a success that we have planned another mixer this February. The mixer is an opportunity to see old friends‚ meet new friends and find out how you can become more involved in the FRWRC. In order for us to stay vital‚ new ideas and energy are needed. We need interested and energetic women to step forward and help us move our organization into the next fifteen years.

To this end‚ we are holding a Membership Mixer gathering on Tuesday‚ February 21‚ 6:00 — 7:30 PM at Samuels Library. Come and join us to meet and mingle with the wonderful women of the FRWRC and learn how you can help impact the lives of women in the community.

The FRWRC needs your help. Through your membership we know that you care about women’s issues. We ask that you plan to attend this meeting and bring at least one guest. Thank you for caring about the future of the FRWRC.
